FAQ

Get answers to frequently asked questions about The Okra Project’s mutual aid programs and how we serve as a vital resource for empowerment, support, and community building.

  • The Okra Project creates initiatives to provide mutual aid and other resources to the Black Trans community. The service pillars of our programs are food security, safety (housing and transportation) and mental health support. Our mutual aid initiatives and resources are rooted in these pillars.

  • You can expect to see 1-2 programs/ initiatives per quarter.

  • We live by the motto of, “Black Trans Femmes to the front.” Our resources are strictly for Black and Brown Trans, queer and non-binary siblings. Please note that our roots are in Brooklyn, so some programs will be specific to the greater NYC area.

  • You can apply directly through Programs or via links provided on our social media accounts which will take you directly to the application process. We do not respond to direct messages nor will we respond to assistance requests via email.

  • Once an application window closes, all verified and qualified applicants who identify as Black and transgender are selected at random. We prioritize Black trans femmes in the majority of our programing. This method allows the process to remain unbiased.

  • As a fiscally sponsored project, we are required to collect a 1099 from each recipient. This is so that recipients are not taxed for the monetary stipends they receive as income. It also ensures that The Okra Project remains tax compliant so that we may continue to serve the community.

  • We receive many applications and have a very thorough process. Each program varies as far as response time and assistance disbursement. Once accepted, a time-frame window will be provided via the acceptance email. We also notify all applicants who are not selected.

  • We require an unlocked Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter handle to be able to see who you are. Due to dishonest attempts from individuals who are not in the community we are serving, we must be able to verify your identity. We will need to see photographs of you on your listed social media accounts.

Please note that if we are unable to confirm your identity, we will not be able to move forward with your application. Refer to our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service for more information.

  • Donate to support our mutual aid programs and to aid in the operations of distribution. Share our programs to community members.
